Winlink Pauses New Production API Access and Client CMS Requests

Winlink has paused new requests for production API access and Common Message Server (CMS) access for new client software while it prepares developer onboarding requirements. In a notice listed Oct. 27, the Winlink Development Team said it will hold those requests until it has a draft of the requirements; it has not announced a timetable for that draft.

Venus Bounce Recovers a Message Across 84 Million Kilometers (52 Million Miles)

A Venus bounce has delivered a readable digital message across approximately 84 million kilometers (52 million miles), advancing amateur-led planetary radio experiments beyond carrier detection. Volunteers at Dwingeloo in the Netherlands transmitted toward Venus on Oct. 17–18, and the team recovered “VENUS ECHO” from signals reflected back to Earth.

AO-129 Digipeater Tests Advance a New UHF Satellite Relay

AMSAT-DL has activated the ERMINAZ-2U digipeater during in-orbit tests, advancing a new 435.900 MHz packet relay for amateur satellite experimenters. The spacecraft received the designation AMSAT-OSCAR 129, or AO-129, on Oct. 23, alongside its companion ERMINAZ-2V, now AO-130.

The team says requests for access to Winlink resources in the preceding three months exceeded the total from the system’s previous 26 years. It attributes the surge to increased interest and productivity among third-party developers using AI programming tools, and says it is reviewing developer support capacity, security and onboarding.

What the Access Hold Covers

The notice names two categories: 1) New requests for the production API and, 2) New client CMS access. Winlink’s glossary describes the CMS servers as coordinating message traffic among Radio Message Server (RMS) gateways and providing email, bulletin and position-reporting services. A new client project seeking the specified production access may have to wait for the onboarding draft.

The announcement addresses new developer access requests. It does not announce a change to ordinary Winlink operation, existing clients or gateway service. It also does not say whether a separate test environment or other development resources are affected.

No Date Yet for Developer Guidance

Winlink says it is collecting information from recent requests and preparing documentation on development requirements. The team asks developers with new requests or questions to use the Winlink support forum. The notice does not say when the draft will be ready or how requests will be handled afterward.

For amateur-radio operators, the immediate effect described is on prospective client development and integrations that need production API or new-client CMS access. The announcement provides no change to on-air messaging procedures or a date for access to resume.
